BS 9999 The new code of practice for fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings
Mick Leadbetter, Birmingham City Council
After 10 years in development, BSI British Standards has published BS 9999:2008 Code of practice for fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings.
BS 9999 gives recommendations and guidance on the design, management and use of buildings to achieve acceptable levels of fire safety for all people in and around buildings. It also provides guidance on the ongoing management of fire safety in a building throughout the entire life cycle of the building, including guidance for designers to ensure that the overall design of a building assists and enhances the management of fire safety. It can be used as a tool for assessing existing buildings, although fundamental change in line with the guidelines might well be limited or not practicable.

Rehabilitation after Injury or Ill Health
Beverley Harrison, Occupational Health Nurse, Greggs the Bakers
It has long been recognised by enlightened employers that an early return to work after injury or ill-health had clear benefits for the employee, as well as the employer. This is also reflected in the current HSE campaign “Managing sickness absence and return to work”, which is also complementary with the introduction of the new Fit Note.
Beverley will be able to show us how an Occupational Health Nurse can assist with this process and how risk assessments can recognise and make allowance for the effects of any health conditions.

The 'Safety Made Easy' Seminar
Various speakers
Following the setting up of the new Health and Safety Executive Board in 2008, one of its first undertakings was to reset and reaffirm the direction of health and safety in its Strategy document, published last year. This document recognises and addresses the many stakeholders who have a role to play in maintaining or improving health and safety standards.
This Seminar aims to show how the Strategy can be applied in a simple and practical way in the workplace, by using case studies that have particular relevance in smaller organisations.
